Adult Continuing Education Class

Hi Everyone-

Last spring I received a call from BYU letting me know about some changes in their policy regarding their part time Adult Continuing Education instructors. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) does not allow a corporation to hire part time workers for more than 30 hours a week without offering them health insurance or paying the penalty tax.  This part of the bill goes into affect soon and the Church is already making numerous changes to comply with this law. BYU has decided that no one who is already employed part time for the Church will be hired by BYU as a Continuing Education Instructor. Since I already work part time for the Church (without health insurance benefits), BYU let me know that I would not be rehired for the current school year. Unfortunately, this is something they had to do.

Since I've known that this might become an issue for awhile, I've tried to figure out a way for me to continue teaching.... as has Brother Prigmore and President Holmstead. However, during a recent visit with President Holmstead I indicated to him that I don't see a way for me to continue even as a volunteer without severely bending policies. Even then, I highly doubt that the Church or The Lord would sign off on the bending. He agreed.

So I suggested someone as my replacement and President Holmstead was going to look into that option. For now, I'm not sure what the status of the class will be.  I hope that it will be able to continue. I'd hope to have more information before emailing all of you but some of you have been asking when class will be starting up again.  Unfortunately, my answer to that question at the moment is "I don't know".

I want all of you to know how much I have enjoyed this class and all of you. This has been an amazing experience for me.  I've appreciated getting to know all of you better, hearing your testimonies and sharing the gospel and some laughs. I have learned so much from each and every one of you!!  Thank you!
